A fearless 12-year-old took a stand for free speech, challenging school authorities over a controversial t-shirt and teaching a valuable lesson on the importance of the First Amendment. This young American patriot taught a valuable lesson to the school board and showed that freedom of speech should be respected.
Seventh-grader Liam Morrison from Nichols Middle School in Middleborough, Massachusetts, found himself in a predicament when he was allegedly sent home due to the five words on his t-shirt.
He claimed that some people at the school complained about the message, making them feel “unsafe.” Undeterred, Liam chose to stand up for his rights and confront the school board, delivering a passionate speech that has since gone viral.
Liam recounted his experience on that fateful day: being pulled out of gym class, having an uncomfortable conversation with two adults, and ultimately being told to remove his shirt before returning to class.
With his father’s support, Liam refused and went home instead. The five words on his shirt? “There are only two genders.” Liam maintained that his shirt wasn’t harmful or threatening, but simply a statement of his beliefs.
He was baffled when school officials claimed that his shirt targeted a “protected class.” Liam pointed out that he never complained about pride flags or diversity posters at the school, respecting others’ rights to their beliefs. He also revealed that many students actually supported his shirt and wanted one themselves, while no one directly expressed their discontent to him.

In response to the claim that his shirt was a disruption to learning, Liam countered that he had never witnessed any negative reactions from his classmates. He also questioned why students causing disruptions in class were not reprimanded, whereas his shirt was deemed unacceptable by the administration.
The young student concluded that the message he received from the school was that diversity of thought would be suppressed. However, this experience taught him that many other students shared his views and that adults could make poor decisions. Liam firmly believed that he had the right to express his political opinions at school, as protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution.
By addressing the School Committee, Liam hoped to bring awareness to this issue and advocate for students’ right to express their opinions without being removed from class. His moving speech received applause from the audience, demonstrating the strength and determination of a young American standing up for his rights – a true embodiment of American values.
