Millions of dollars in tourism revenue is expected to lose due to Major League Baseball officials’ decision to move the All-Star Game and draft weekend from Atlanta, where the Braves play, in protest of a new voting law in Georgia.

Holly Quinlan, president and CEO of Cobb Travel and Tourism said that the “estimated lost economic impact” from the relocation is more than $100 million.

The revenue that the All-Star Game typically brings into the county can pull businesses out of debt after COVID-19 damaged its economy. Cobb County’s travel and tourism department told WSB-TV Atlanta, “This event would have directly impacted our county and the state, as visitors spend their dollars on local accommodations, transportation, entertainment and recreation, food and retail throughout the county. This event would have directly impacted our county and the state, as visitors spend their dollars on local accommodations, transportation, entertainment and recreation, food and retail throughout the county.”

“In the initial stages of the pandemic, many Cobb [County] hotels saw single digit occupancy numbers,” Quinlan said. “The 8,000-plus MLB contracted hotel room nights that will not actualize as a result of the MLB All-Star Game relocation will have a negative impact on Cobb’s hospitality industry and other local businesses, further delaying recovery.”

On Friday, MLB announced that in response to the recently passed law in the state that critics say would make it harder to vote, this season’s All-Star Game and draft will not be held in Atlanta.

The Atlanta Braves came out with a public statement saying they are “deeply disappointed by the decision of the Major League Baseball to move its’ 2021 All-Star Game”. The team also empathizes with the businesses that will suffer from this decision, addressing the businesses that are “the victims of this decision”.

In a video from a Fox News segment, a small business owner from Georgia expresses the damage that this decision will have on her restaurant, saying: “We’re trying to build back from a pandemic… something like this is not good for business”.

The legislation, passed in the battleground state by the GOP-controlled legislature after President Joe Biden ‘s victory there, will impose voter identification requirements for absentee ballots, give state officials the authority to take over local elections boards, limit the use of ballot drop boxes, and make it a crime for politically affiliated persons to approach voters in line to give them food and water.

Democrats who oppose the measure argue the provisions are aimed at disenfranchising voters. The American Civil Liberties Union, alongside other groups, sued Georgia on Tuesday, alleging the legislation “placed burdensome, unjustified, and unnecessary restrictions on voters, particularly voters of color and other historically disenfranchised communities.” There have also been a wave of corporations voicing opposition to the law.

Biden, who has called Georgia’s voting reform law “Jim Crow on steroids,” endorsed the MLB’s decision to protest the law.

“I think today’s professional athletes are acting incredibly responsibly,” the president said this week in an interview with ESPN. “I would strongly support them doing that. People look to them. They’re leaders.”
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump called for a baseball boycott.
The Cobb County Travel and Tourism office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Washington Examiner.

MLB’s decision “is really probably the first of many boycotts of our state to come.” Said by Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, a Democrat to CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield.

She added on her Twitter that “until the unnecessary barriers put in place to restrict access to the ballot box are removed,” she expects Georgia to suffer many more consequences.

The irony of the situation is that Georgia’s new voting law is less stringent than Colorado’s yet not one word about theirs. As for Biden and his asinine comment, it could only come from a brainless nitwit, or a democrat, they are the same.

Cheating is disqualification, the best will not then win, letting a cheater win lowers the quality of representation, everyone loses. And it will be more than jobs.
