Disney has hit another controversy for its dress code. TikTok influencer Ashley Aiello donned a ball gown to take pictures in front of Disneyland’s Castle, but she said she was promptly “dress coded” by a security guard who called it “a security issue.” What was unique about the Viola was that it was not the usual crop top or halter.
Aiello, a TikToker, posted a video explaining her experience and showcasing the attire that caused Disneyland to enforce its dress code.
In her viral TikTok video, she starts by explaining that she runs a small business that sells Disney-themed clothing and accessories. Despite being a Disney fanatic, Aiello only visits Disney “one to three times a year.” So when Aiello can go to Disney, she takes the opportunity to take product photos for her shop. She was shocked when the staff gave her a dress code.
“Being the extra person that I am, I got a ball gown to wear with my daughter in front of Disneyland Castle for product photos,” Aiello said, revealing a photo of her in an elaborate green gown. “I’ve seen a lot of influencers take pictures with prom dresses. I’ve done it before at Disney World. I really didn’t think there was anything wrong with that!”
Although Ashley felt that she should have been allowed to wear the green dress at the theme park, floor-length dresses are a violation of Disney’s theme park dress code due to various safety concerns with these outfits. In addition, the Disney website details the dress code policy by writing how “costumes may not reach or drag on the ground,” and if a particular costume has various layers to it, those outfits “may be subject to additional security screening.”
Folks online flocked to the comments section to share their views on why Aiello had a dress code. Due to various safety concerns, floor-length dresses are against the Disney theme park dress code. According to Disneyland’s official website, “Costumes must not reach or drag on the ground,” and full-body, layered costumes “may be subject to additional security screening.”
“That dress is so puffy! It can get caught up in between the rails of an attraction. … I think that’s the main problem!” one TikToker clarified.
“You can’t look like one of the characters as it’s against the rules. Too long to explain, but one reason is kidnappers,” another wrote.
Others expanded on the previous comment to share how adult cosplayers at Disney can confuse employees and young visitors. For this reason, Disney parks have had rules for years that adults are not allowed to wear costumes. Disneyland’s website states, “Costumes may not be worn by guests 14 years of age or older.”
“Disney says the reason they don’t allow adults to dress up is because it could ruin the magic for a kid,” commented one TikTok user.
“I think that’s because it looks too much like Ariel’s park dress,” wrote another.
