An attempted carjacking suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition after the delivery driver whose car he targeted fought back.
As 6ABC in Philly reports, the shooting happened at 7:38 p.m. Thursday when the 39-year-old delivery driver was dropping off food on the 3300 block of H Street in the city’s Kensington section.
Police tell 6ABC the driver was approached by a 23-year-old man who pointed a gun at the male victim and demanded he gets out of the car. The victim, who police say has a license to carry, grabbed his own gun and shot the suspect six times, seriously injuring the would-be carjacker.
The victim was licensed to carry a gun and defended himself, according to investigators
“I was just remodeling my kitchen and talking to my son, and he was about to come out the door, and as soon as he went to open the door – that’s when we heard the shots,” Eric Howard, a neighbor, told WPVI.
“The driver of that car- when he saw that this male was pointing a gun at him, demanding that he get out of the vehicle – brandished his own firearm, which he was legally allowed to carry,” said Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace.
At last report, the suspect, who was not named in the report, was in “extremely critical condition” at a Philadelphia hospital.
Two people who were with the suspect are also being questioned by police.
The incident comes as Philadelphia has been rocked by more than 90 carjackings this year alone. In 2021, there were more than 750 incidents.
Now it appears some are ready to fire back, even as Philadelphia police have ramped up patrols in recent weeks.
The shooting was one of several recent incidents in which would-be robbers or carjackers were shot by their intended victims in Philadelphia.
Nearly two weeks ago a legally armed man shot a teenager who tried to rob him at gunpoint.
In early January, a legally armed Lyft driver shot and critically injured two suspects who carjacked him in Philadelphia.
