This Is What It Means If You Find An X On Your Driver’s License.. joe September 1, 2022 Uncategorized New Yorkers can now mark their gender as “X” on their state driver’s license, learner’s permit, or ID card just in time for Pride Month, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced. This change is being implemented in accordance with the State’s Gender Recognition Act that officially takes effect June 24 which provides protections for transgender and non-binary NYers by making it easier for people to change their name, sex designation, and birth certificate to reflect their identity. Now, people living in the Eastern state can get a gender-neutral driver’s license that includes an “X” instead of an “M” or “F” when describing a person’s sex. Many New York politicians have praised the switch, claiming that the progressive update will make things much better for people who do not identify as either male or female. Here’s what Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement: “As we prepare to celebrate Pride Month in a few days, I am excited to announce this historic change that represents another victory in our fight to help ensure equality and respect for the LGBTQ+ community.” “Every person, regardless of their gender identity or expression, deserves to have an identity document that reflects who they are. My administration remains committed to ensuring that New York is a place of value, love, and belonging for members of the LGBTQ+ community.” Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder of the Department of Motor Vehicles is joining hands with the Hochul praising the switch: “Perhaps more than any other state agency, New Yorkers directly engage with their government through the DMV, so offering identity documents that are representative of all New Yorkers is a significant milestone. We are thrilled to implement this new option that we know will have a positive impact on the lives of so many of our customers.” Those who already have state-issued IDs will have the option to change their gender to “X” at the DMV or online which has already started in July. New York joins 24 states that offer a gender-neutral option on some state-issued documents, according to CNN. Washington, D.C., added the gender option to its government-issued IDs in 2017. In March, the State Department added the “X” gender marker choice to passports.
