Residents of a mostly black neighborhood whose land borders a Palm Springs public golf course want a stand of Tamarisk trees removed because they represent racism and segregation.
The residents claim that the trees were planted in the 1960s to deliberately block their view of the mountains and the golf course.
Lawrence Crossley neighborhood residents complained that the trees evoked feelings of “segregation” and “discrimination.” The trees reportedly block a historically African-American neighborhood from the city-owned Tahquitz Creek Golf Course.

Because of the residents’ outcry, Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon and other city officials told residents they would be removing the line of trees and a chain link fence separating the properties after residents said the trees kept property values in the predominantly black neighborhood down.
Robert also stated that “We’re responding to a neighborhood that is in distress about a nuisance tree.”
City manager David Ready warned that the tree removal would not happen right away because the full city council would have to vote on the issue. He added that the trees would be down in three months.
The city estimates that the tree removal would cost $169,000.
“The Palm Springs City Council unanimously approved the tamarisk tree removal in January. City staff estimated the process would cost about $170,000, which also included the cost of removing a chain link fence between the trees and the backyards of Crossley Tract residents. The process will be paid for out of insurance funds the city received after different trees on another part of the golf course were damaged during a wind storm last year,” according to reports.
