Actress Mary T. Mara, best known for her roles in television dramas such as Law & Order, ER, and Nash Bridges, has died. She was found dead in a river according to a statement by the New York State Police.

The 61-year-old Mara was found dead on June 26 after a suspected drowning incident while swimming in the St. Lawrence River, according to a New York State Police press release. Authorities said in the release that Mara’s body showed no signs of foul play.

“Mary was one in a million—one of the best actresses I ever met,” Mara’s manager, Craig Dorfman, said in a statement. “I saw her for the first time off-Broadway in 1992 in Mad Forest and she was electrifying. She was unique, wickedly funny, and a wonderful woman who will be missed.”

According to a statement from a representative, Mara was staying at the summer home of her sister Martha. A preliminary investigation suggested Mara died by drowning while swimming. Her body has been transported to Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy will be performed to determine an official cause of death.

The New York State Police department also released information about the incident that occurred in June 2022.

“On June 26, 2022, at 8:10 a.m., State Police responded to 33753 Old Farm Road in the town of Cape Vincent, Jefferson County, for a reported possible drowning. When Troopers, along with Cape Vicent Fire and Ambulance, arrived on the scene, they discovered a female deceased in the St. Lawrence River. The victim has been identified as 61-year-old Mary T. Mara from Cape Vincent, NY.”

The following day, police officers had more to say about the death of the famous ER actress.

“On June 27, 2022, The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office performed a post-mortem examination and determined that Mary Mara’s manner of death was an accident due to asphyxiation and water drowning. The investigation is continuing.”

Mara had been reportedly staying with her sister in Syracuse on property that fronts the river. Born on September 21, 1960, she made her television debut in 1989 in the TV movie The Preppie Murder. The same year, she also made her big film debut in Blue Steel.

Prior, she studied acting at San Francisco State University and the Yale School of Drama and established the theater company HART (Haight Ashbury Repertory Theatre). In 2003, she won the Monaco International Film Festival’s 2003 Angel Film Award for her role in Em and Me.

While she also worked off-Broadway, she was mostly known for her dramatic television roles. In addition, she appeared on NYPD Blue, West Wing, The Practice, Lost, and Dexter. Her final role was in the film Break Even in 2020.
