They Had A Quiet Lunch On The Beach, Then They Got The Bill And All Hell…..

A would-be happy mother-and-daughter vacation in Greece ended in disappointment and a possible court battle.

Brenda Moulton and her daughter, 19-year-old Kaylea, claim they were “lured” into DK Oyster bar in Platis Gialos beach, before being “overcharged” for their food and drinks.

Moulton told the Greek newspaper θEMA: “An employee of one of the restaurants in Platis Gialos jumped in front of us and started saying persistently: ‘Sit here! Sit here!'”

According to them, they were charged 600 euros ($600) for two drinks and a plate of crab legs, and now they are taking the restaurant to court.

The pair had a mojito each, along with some crab legs, but were mortified when a bill of over €520 ($520) arrived along with an €80 ($80) mandatory tip.

Platis Gialos, and Mykonos in general, is known as a luxurious area, with many bars and restaurants that charge a steep price for their goods.

After the pair had finished their food and drinks, they asked for the bill.

“I went in and saw a man sitting at a table. ‘Sit down,’ he told me and showed me the bill. I almost fainted. At first, it was not detailed, because the paper did not show exactly what we had ordered. The guy asked me to pay almost 600 euros and I told him he could not, some mistake would be made. This account could not be ours,” she added.

Although the food and drinks that the mother-daughter duo ordered could never cost as much as the restaurant charged, they do admit to taking up space at the restaurant for two hours. While they enjoyed their time on the deck chairs, their time was ruined as soon as they received the bill.

“[I told them] ‘two mojitos and two crab legs can not make 600 euros. I will not pay you.’ He then told me verbatim: ‘I will call the police. They will keep you here, and you will not return to your homeland. We can easily find where you live,’” Moulton told Greek local outlet THEMA about the incident that occurred on the day of May 11, 2022.

After the threat, the day was ruined. Because the mother and her daughter did not want to get stuck in Greece, they hurried to pay the expensive bill. They did not want to get stuck on their vacation because of a pair of crab legs and a pair of mojitos.

When the pair left the restaurant, they started warning other potential patrons to beware because they had been ripped off. That’s when the staff came out and threatened them all over again.

“… the ‘boss’ of the store came out furious and approached us in a threatening mood. I immediately raised my voice. I shouted at him…” Moulton added.

Moulton reluctantly paid the bill, but the pair are now taking legal action against the bar, who have denied any wrongdoing.

The restaurant said, “There is no free country in the western world that would force us to explain to each customer why we charge the way we do. However, we have often tried to explain the great cost of operating a business like ours. Would you ask Bugatti why they charge as much as they do? Would you ask all the luxury brands to justify their prices? You may opt for cheaper products and services. There is no monopoly.”

Moulton’s lawyer, Marizanna Kikiri, says that her clients suffered threatening and unfair behavior from the restaurant.

Other TripAdvisor reviews reveal guests experiencing similar treatment.

One review states: “You are lured in with happy waiters welcoming you in and sat down with no menus and when you can see a menu there’s no prices. We ordered one cocktail apiece and 12 oysters and it was over £400. This place is a scam and needs to be investigated.”

And another adds: “Big scam! They lure you in then charge some ridiculous amount for a simple appetiser and they are extremely rude! Stay away!!”
