When a group of six young people could not figure out how to raise enough money to bail their friend out of jail this week, authorities say one of them came up with the idea to burglarize an old man’s house.
The good news? A 65-year-old Florida homeowner successfully fought back against two armed home invaders Thursday morning — managing to turn the tables on the pair by using his own gun and shooting one of them before they took off from his Pensacola residence.
The bad news? The victim’s granddaughter came up with the idea for the ill-fated heist, authorities told the station.

It happened around 4 a.m. at a home in the 7300 block of W Jackson St. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office says the homeowner Keith Fendley shot one of the suspects who broke in.
Deputies say his granddaughter, Cynthia Register, and five others were trying to get bail money for a friend. Register stayed outside but two others broke into the house, according to Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons. Fendley fired his gun and shot one of them.

Below are the suspects in the armed home robbery and their corresponding charges:
- Natalie Gagne, 19 — armed home invasion/robbery
- Dominique Gonzalez, 19 — armed home invasion/robbery
- Tyari Crear, 18 — armed home invasion/robbery
- Clint Hochalter, 17 — armed home invasion/robbery (principal)
- Jamarquez Cromwell, 19 — armed home invasion/robbery
- Cynthia Register, 18 — armed home invasion/robbery (principal)

Sheriff Simmons said Crear and Cromwell broke into Fendley’s home after the group cut the power. Once inside, Fendley shot Cromwell in the chest.
The group of six then got into cars and drove off with one vehicle crashing nearby. A second vehicle then took the entire group to Baptist Hospital.
Deputies at the hospital stopped the group of six and eventually arrested them for the incident. Cromwell suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Sheriff Simmons said Fendley was not harmed.
The six suspects were all booked into the Escambia County Jail, where they are being held on bonds ranging from $50,000 to $750,000.
