Well, thanks to Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon, a 17-year-old California teen who was responsible for plowing a car into a mother and her 8-month-old son will just spend five months behind bars. Gascon is under fire again after giving a teen a light diversionary sentence.
In August 2021, a 16-year-old driver plowed over a mother and her infant in Venice, California, in a horrifying surveillance video.
“Rachel,” the mother, was pushing her baby in a stroller down an alleyway when the teen drove up in a stolen vehicle and ran her down together with her 8-month-old baby.
The mother, who asked to be identified only as Rachel, wrote in a victim’s impact statement:
“I thought those were the last moments of our lives; we were dead. That feeling, along with the memory of a car accelerating directly into us, will haunt me forever.”
The footage shows that Rachel tried to get the stroller out of the road before they were struck. She was thrown across the hood of the suspect vehicle. Other people pursued the 16-year-old driver as he attempted to flee the scene, which was then purposefully slammed by an incoming pickup truck.
But despite the crime being caught on video with multiple witnesses present, Gascon’s office gave the teen the lightest possible sentence.
The 17-year-old was charged with two felony counts of assault by means of force likely to cause serious bodily harm and one felony count of hit-and-run, to which he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 5 to 7 months in a juvenile probation camp. Prosecutors describe the camp as “lower than an army faculty and somewhat bit more durable than a summer season camp.”
Here’s what Rachel said in a statement according to Fox News:
“I was also told that his record would be wiped clean when he turns 18. How on earth can that be? He tried to murder two innocent pedestrians. Murder. And we have video evidence. My child would be dead if I hadn’t been there to protect him.”
“George Gascon doesn’t value my life or the life of my child, or any other victim out there and would rather reward the monsters like [the juvenile suspect] by demonstrating to them that their actions have no consequences. DA Gascon is telling him and every other thug in LA County that it doesn’t matter if you try to murder people. Why are Gascon’s policies prioritizing the livelihood of rotten monsters when my child, my baby, who is incapable of protecting himself, is left to fend for himself, and is essentially being told his life doesn’t matter?”
In a report by Foxnews, District Attorney George Gascon whose soft-on-crime is facing criticism for leniency in more serious cases — including preventing prosecutors from seeking enhancements that can stiffen penalties, among other things, and not sentencing juvenile offenders as adults.
The most notable case of Gascón’s leniency involves Hannah Tubbs, formerly known as James Edward Tubbs. The transgender male received only two years in a juvenile facility for a 2014 child molestation case. He was later charged with murder in a 2019 case.
Fortunately, Rachel and her son survived the incident without serious injury.
