ABC News reported that Ebro Ahmed, 27, jumped into a moving school bus in St. Paul, Minnesota, and pulled the emergency brake after noticing the driver in distress on Monday.
Saint Paul Public Schools told ABC News there was a medical emergency on board, paramedics responded, and no injuries were reported. The district said students were transferred to another bus and sent home, and counselors checked in with students the next day. A district spokesperson said the driver was released from the hospital and is resting at home.
What the video shows
According to ABC News, surveillance video released by the convenience store Ya Bricks Snacks and Tobacco captured the incident. Ahmed said he was standing outside the store when he saw a school bus drive by with its door wide open.
What Ahmed says happened
Ahmed told ABC News he looked inside and saw the driver having what looked to be a seizure. He said he sprinted to the bus, jumped in, and pulled the emergency brake. “I really felt like it was my duty,” he told ABC News. “Also, too, it’s kids we’re talking about, you know. Even if I were to die, it would still be worth it.”
Describing the scene, he said some children were screaming while others stayed calm, and two girls near the front helped him. He said he tossed his phone and glasses to one of them so he could act quickly.
Staying calm
Ahmed told ABC News he credited the TV drama Grey’s Anatomy with helping him keep his composure, saying the show offers “tips and tricks” useful in unexpected situations.
