A man died after being crushed by a hydraulic telescopic urinal in central London, England, while he was working on the device, the BBC reported.

The pop-up toilets are stored underground during the day and are raised to street level at night for people to use, an initiative designed to discourage urination on the street.

The man was working on the underground pop-up lavatory in Cambridge Circus, just yards away from the Palace Theatre, when the accident happened at about 1 pm on Friday.

The incident took place outside the Palace Theatre, home to Harry Potter And The Cursed Child.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said:

“We were called today at 1.05pm to reports of an incident on Shaftesbury Avenue, Charing Cross.

“We sent a number of resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, members of our hazardous area response team, members of our tactical response unit and a medic in a fast response car.

“We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.”

The victim, who had been working below street level, was freed around 3:40 pm by emergency services but was pronounced dead. A crane had to be brought in to try to lift the urinal out of the ground.

His identity was not released.

About 25 firefighters attended the incident, along with other emergency services such as police, paramedics, and air ambulance workers.

The worker was trapped below street level “underneath” the urinal, according to the London Fire Brigade.

“We’re sorry to have to update that, despite the efforts of emergency services, the man who was critically injured in Cambridge Circus was pronounced dead at the scene,” Metropolitan Police tweeted.

“Firefighters worked with partner agencies and used a winch to free him. He was left in the care of London Ambulance Service and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene,” they added.
