Her Body Was Found In A Cornfield, And Now They Have Been Able To…

On a dark and spooky Halloween night in 1981, a young woman was brutally murdered and left on the side of the road. Although the criminal who committed the grisly crime was caught, he never revealed the identity of his victim. This left the case a mystery for 39 years until authorities made a shocking discovery.

The woman, who had been nicknamed “Jane Doe,” had been found in a cornfield in Dixie, Georgia, and her disfigured corpse made it difficult for police to identify her.

The autopsy report revealed that she had been both stabbed in the stomach and strangled to death. Although the cops estimated that the murder victim was between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four and had some basic details like her height and weight, they were never able to find a match in the missing persons database.

The case went cold for three decades until a tip came in that led to a positive ID. Someone had seen the police sketch of “Jane Doe” on Facebook and believed that the victim was her missing friend, Cheryl Hammack. After a successful DNA test, authorities confirmed that “Jane Doe” was, in fact, Hammack.

When Hammack’s body was found in the cornfield, the police suspected George Newsome, a worker at a traveling fair in a nearby town. Although they found a rope in his vehicle that matched the type used to strangle the victim, Newsome never cooperated. He escaped custody shortly afterward but was arrested again in 1983 and confessed to the murder. He said he met the victim during the traveling fair while in Tallahassee, Florida. However, he never gave her name to investigators.

After the murder, Hammack was buried with an inscription on her tombstone that read: “Known only to God.” But now that her identity has been confirmed, she may finally rest in peace.

Hammack’s identity as the “Jane Doe” from the cornfield has brought closure to the case and finally revealed who the young woman was. Her tragic murder will never be forgotten, but at least now, her loved ones have the chance to properly grieve and honor her memory.
