On Thursday defense officials said, Russian forces left Snake Island in the Black Sea, giving Ukraine a victory that would ease Russia’s blockade on Ukrainian ports.

Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s office, posted on Twitter, “KABOOM! No Russian troops on the Snake Island anymore. Our Armed Forces did a great job,” along with a picture of smoke rising from various parts of a small but strategic outpost that was taken by Russia in the early stages of its invasion.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the withdrawal of its troops from the island, which it had been using as an outpost to supply its forces with anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles as well as radar systems. The ministry claimed that the withdrawal came after the soldiers stationed there had completed all of their assigned tasks.

Snake Island, which the Russians took control of on February 24, is barely 35 kilometers (22 miles) off the Ukrainian shoreline, and within the range of the missile, artillery, and drone strikes from the land.

Boris Johnson, the prime minister of the United Kingdom, praised the Ukrainians for their “extraordinary ability to fight back, overcome adversity, and to reject the Russians,” calling the recapture of the island “proof of that ability.”.

“In the end, it will prove impossible for Putin to hold down a country that will not accept his rule,” Johnson told a news conference at the NATO summit in Madrid.

In the early stages of the conflict, the defenders of Snake Island told a Russian vessel calling for them to surrender to “go f**k yourselves,” sparking a rebellious meme that became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance.

After then, the Russian ship bombed the island. The soldier who sent the message survived, though it is unclear how many others died in the strike.

After what Kiev claims was an attack by the Ukrainians, the Moskva, the command and control ship for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, later sank.
