Panhandlers and fundraising teams are often found at street corners holding signs, asking passing motorists for modest donations. Many motorists find these people annoying, and some even react aggressively. What would you do if your young daughter asked to stand at a street corner to hold a sign? If you are the parents of 8-year-old Addie Bryan, you not only let her, you joyously encourage her to do so!
Without the extensive and absolutely free-of-charge treatment at the hospital, little Addie would never be able to walk as she does today. To express her gratitude, Addie set out to raise a fund.
Addie was born with a rare bone disorder called Larsen Syndrome which caused her legs to contort and made it impossible for her to bend them.
Luckily, she got to undergo a few years of treatment at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children free of charge.
Now, thanks to the dedicated doctors and the free treatment, Addie can not just walk but run so the little girl wanted to repay the kindness she had received from the hospital by raising a fund.
Armed with a sign that read “My birthday wish is to raise $8,000 for my hospital, Texas Scottish Rite for Children!”, Addie would spend the next several days standing on a street corner with her Mom.
Addie’s original target was only to raise around $8,000.
“I just hold a sign that says, ‘For my birthday, I want to raise $8,000 for Scottish Rite Hospital,” the girl told USA Today.
She would run up to cars that had donations ready for her and rush back to the sidewalk to resume her requests.
A completely selfless, mature, and intelligent young lady, all Addie wanted was to thank her hospital and pay their kind deed forward to the next generation of children who would need their care like she did.
News of her efforts swept the nation and the world, and donations began piling in, totaling a whopping $19,500.
But then an anonymous benefactor, shocked and inspired by Addie’s generosity, decided to write to the hospital and donate an additional $50,000 in Addie’s name, bringing the total to $79,500!
Although her humanitarian efforts received a lot of attention, Bryan insisted that this was never about her.
She said that her only goal was to help the place that healed her and became her second home and she did this for the other children that are getting treated in the hospital.
“I think all the kids are going to be happy, and they can get out of the hospital faster,” Addie said to USA Today.
