She Had No Idea That Making A Delivery Order Would End Up Saving Her Life…
In a harrowing incident, a captive woman managed to seek help from the police by placing an unusual order on Grub Hub. She requested a breakfast sandwich and a burger at five in the morning and included a desperate plea for assistance in the order slip. Fortunately, the Grub Hub order caught the attention of the right individuals, ultimately leading to her rescue from a dangerous captor.
The staff at Chipper Truck Café in Yonkers, New York, a town situated north of Manhattan and the Bronx, were both puzzled and concerned when they received the early-morning order. They feared that the woman who placed the order might be in grave danger.
Initially, the restaurant’s owner, Alice Bermejo, was unsure about how to handle the woman’s plea for police intervention. However, she ultimately took the request seriously and contacted the authorities as instructed. The hastily written note in the order’s add-on section was the critical clue that alerted Bermejo and her employees to the fact that something was amiss with the Grub Hub delivery order.
Upon discovering the note, an employee promptly consulted with Bermejo. She emphasized the importance of contacting the police to safeguard the potential victim. As Bermejo recounted to ABC, “He was like, ‘Call the police. Can’t take any risks. Better safe than sorry.’”
The order slip contained the following message, scribbled in the additional instructions section for the Grub Hub delivery driver: “Please call the police his going to call me when you deliver come with the cones please and don’t make it obvious.” Though the note featured imperfect spelling and grammar, it effectively conveyed the urgency of the situation and the woman’s dire need for assistance.
The victim reported that the perpetrator had sexually assaulted her and was holding her captive, only allowing her access to her phone when she needed to order food to survive. Thankfully, Bermejo and her staff thoroughly examined the order and called the police as requested. Their prompt action led to the arrest of the sexual predator and prevented further harm to the victim.
The assailant is now facing multiple charges, including rape, unlawful imprisonment, strangulation, criminal possession of a weapon, and sexual abuse. The 24-year-old victim, who had been held in the Bronx, was liberated when the police arrived at the scene.
Bermejo told ABC, “We really had no idea of the gravity of the situation until after everything had happened.” The victim’s friend later called Bermejo to express gratitude, and Grub Hub donated $5,000 to her business in appreciation of her life-saving intervention.
Lisa Belot, director of public relations at Grub Hub, praised the actions of Bermejo and her employees in a statement to ABC:
“Every time we see a simple but extraordinary act like this, we are amazed by how our partners positively impact their communities. From drivers delivering in difficult weather to our corporate employees volunteering at food banks to these restaurant employees in Yonkers who recognized a serious situation and acted quickly, we’re grateful and humbled that Grubhub can be a part of such incredible stories of kindness and heroism.”
