Having hundreds of people to take care of on a busy evening is one of the challenges of working in the hospitality industry. Therefore, it makes sense that servers might need to come up with ways to uniquely identify each of their clients.
However, as one Twitter user has demonstrated, their mnemonic techniques aren’t always well received. Suffice it to say, the customer – who uses the profile name “The Cake Lady” – was not impressed.
After finding something annoying on her bar receipt, that woman went on Twitter. She was upset about the bartender’s decision to write “girl by herself” next to her name on the printed receipt.
The woman then shared a photo of her bill after a night out on which she was referred to as: “Girl by herself.” However, after tweeting about the employee’s “disrespect,” the woman has received both praise and condemnation from online users.

It all started when she made the decision to go to the bar by herself. The woman, who goes by “The Cake Lady” on social media and appears to own Chamia’s Cake Studio in Baltimore, Maryland, decided to enjoy a quiet night out by herself in Washington, DC.
The Cake Lady ordered four cocktails and after she made a few drinks with a bill of $64 the waiter then brought her bill, as she read the bartender’s description of her, the quiet evening changed, the supposed to be quiet and enjoyable evening turned sour, as she read the bartender’s description of her.
The Cake Lady took to social media to voice her concerns, in a username @GotMiAAngel she expressed her disgust saying, “The description is so disrespectful,” adding several crying emojis for good measure.
However, some people online shared their own experiences with not-so-flattering descriptions. With one commenter wrote, “Like why u pointing it out?? Like embarrassing you for what?”
Hitting out at the descriptor, she added that she “wasn’t even by herself”, so it was “all around disrespectful.”

According to the Daily Mail, other people joined in to share their personal stories in an apparent effort to comfort The Cake Lady. Another shared they were identified as “raspy voice guy”, while someone else admitted their worst description came courtesy of a business that called them “lil ugly dude” on the receipt.
Even though it may not feel good to hear someone refer to you as a “girl by herself,” the woman may have found solace in the comments left by others who admitted to having also been that “girl.”

And what’s so wrong with sipping alcohol alone? Nevertheless, some people failed to grasp the significance of the situation.
As one person commented,“Wh disrespectful? Seems a simple way to help the waiters identify guests they are serving. How else would you like them to describe you – color of hair, clothes. Only in the US do you get so hung up on all this. We’ve got bigger issues to be thinking about than this petty one.”
However, one social media user, who worked in the food service industry, said this doesn’t always work, saying “As a former server/bartender I tried to avoid descriptions like this, but depending on how well coworkers could communicate/knew table numbers, it did happen on occasion.”
