While stationed in Hawaii for two years, a couple of lowlife squatters broke into his New Port Richey, Florida home and started living in it. When he finally came back to Florida after working hard for the military, Army Spc. Michael Sharkey was eager to move back to his home with his wife.

But what’s more shocking, they were ex-convicts with 14 years of prison time between them. “They are criminals,” says the soldier, who was deployed to Afghanistan two years ago and then stationed in Hawaii. But a Florida real estate law prevented him from reclaiming his house because the squatters had established residency.

“I am serving my country, and they have more rights to my home than I do,” Sharkey said.

The squatters, Julio Ortiz and his girlfriend Fatima Cardoso have no intention of leaving Sharkey’s house, claiming they had an oral agreement to live there “rent free.” Assuming there was such an agreement, it wouldn’t be likely to hold up in court, as most real estate matters and leases lasting longer than a year need to be in writing to be enforced.

But Lisa Pettus, Sharkey’s friend, claims that there was no such agreement. Pettus claims that she had worked with Ortiz to help her “fix up Sharkey’s home” while he was away, but never agreed to let the squatters stay in the home. Pettus discovered the couple living in the home two months after the renovations were complete.

Police told Sharkey that they could do nothing about the couple, Julio Ortiz and Fatima Cardosa, since they already established residency, so the matter would have to be settled in a civil court.

“The people that are in this house cannot produce any documentation, lease, agreement, anything that they belong in that house,” said Sharkey.

Word got out that Sharkey was being victimized. That’s when a group of military veteran bikers took swift action. Since the police did not help Sharkey when he needed them, this renegade biker gang figured they give it a shot.

The biker gang visited Ortiz and Cardosa to “peacefully make the squatters uncomfortable.”

And it worked!

Ortiz and Cardosa fled the scene almost immediately. They packed up their belongings and left the home for good.
Sharkey and his wife were so grateful to the group of military veteran bikers. They had saved the day and stepped up to the plate when the government and the police force had let Sharkey down.
