It’s said that a police officer is never off duty, and that was certainly the case for Deputy Jeremie Nix. He was driving home in Ocala, Florida after a long shift when he saw a woman frantically waving her arms at him from her car at an intersection. Nechole Crowell was in distress because her three-month-old son Kingston was having difficulty breathing. She handed him to Deputy Nix with a plea, “Don’t let my baby die.”
The incident was all caught on dashcam video from Deputy Nix’s cruiser. The baby was barely breathing and Deputy Nix attempted to revive him, but he could only take one faint breath. The deputy radioed for an ambulance but knew that the baby didn’t have time to wait.
Thinking quickly, Deputy Nix decided that the fastest way to save Kingston’s life would be to use his patrol car’s lights and sirens to speed through traffic on the crowded highway. He instructed the mother to follow him as he drove the child to the nearest hospital.
The deputy arrived at the emergency room just in time. Thanks to his quick thinking and actions, doctors were able to save Kingston’s life. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office praised Deputy Nix’s heroic actions on its official YouTube page, stating that because of Deputy Nix’s actions, “baby Kingston is alive today.”
Deputy Nix visited young Kingston in the hospital, accompanied by his wife. Kingston’s mother was so grateful for his help and credited God for putting Deputy Nix in the right place at the right time.
She wrote on Facebook, “With his fast thinking, HE & GOD saved my son. His word to me was ‘Don’t you worry, I will not leave until I help save your son! GOD had me in the right place because he knew you needed me.”
Deputy Nix was also grateful to have been in the right place at the right time to save Kingston’s life.
He said, “In my 17 years of doing this job, that was the most scary, emotional, and rewarding day ever.” Deputy Nix thanked God for guiding him that day and for putting him in a position to make a difference.
This incident reminds us that sometimes the most important thing we can do is act quickly and think on our feet. Deputy Nix’s actions remind us of the importance of selflessness and putting others first, no matter the circumstances.
