Now, a McDonald’s employee has revealed a lesser-known truth about the fast-food giant’s onions.
After a man posted a 36-second TikTok video claiming to be a McDonald’s employee showcased the entire process. McDonald’s fans were shocked to find out how the fast-food giant prepares the onions it places on the food it sells.
In the original clip posted by @maccasmyths that has been removed from the platform, TikToker reveals that the fast-food giant uses “large sliced onions” as well as “dehydrated onions” on burgers.
The video offering a glimpse behind the scenes at McDonald’s has racked up millions of views in just over 24 hours but also elicited negative remarks.
The man in the video begins the process by pouring the contents of a sachet of dried onions into a plastic tub. He then fills the tub with water up to a designated line
Small bits of onion could be seen floating around the top of the tub, which was covered with a lid and placed in the fridge.
The McDonald’s employee then explains that it generally takes two hours in the fridge before the onions are ready.
The mixture is then poured through a strainer to eliminate excess fluid, completing the process.
“There’s your dehydrated onions,” the man declares as the clip concludes.
TikTok users that viewed the video expressed disappointment in McDonald’s, with one saying that the fast-food giant crossed the line with the onion preparation.
“Man we can’t even get fresh onions,” lamented one user.

Still, some commenters thought that other viewers were overreacting to the video. “I can’t believe dehydrated onions are what some people wanna draw the line at,”said one user.
