Bill Maher might be as liberal as the day is long, but what he said about woke and cancel culture is totally spot on…
Usually, comedian Bill Maher is no friend of conservative thought, but he said something last Sunday on “The Ben Shapiro Show” that should definitely make everyone take notice. He argued that some of his fellow liberals have gone too far left in recent years, even adding that his own political views “haven’t changed.”
Maher also told this Daily Wire editor that the term “woke” has become something he terms an “eye roll” and it was something that hadn’t even existed in the recent past. Yes, he supports combating injustice, but he also thinks that this word has become associated with “goofy” liberal political stances.
“I haven’t changed at all. My politics haven’t changed, they’ve changed,” Maher said. “People say to me sometimes, ‘Have you changed?’ No, it’s just that five years ago no one was talking about defunding the police, I never heard that phrase five years ago. That’s not me changing, that’s things changing. I’m reacting to it as I’ve always been.”
“Letting three-year-olds decide what gender they are, this wasn’t something five years ago,” he continued. “Free speech, you know, used to be a left-wing thing that we were proud and owned, and now that seems to be under attack.” (RELATED: Bill Maher Says It’s ‘Worth Asking’ Why Putin Didn’t Invade Ukraine Under Donald Trump)
You see, Maher refers to himself as an “old school liberal” and he speaks out against such things as wokeness, cancel culture, and other political stances that were associated with the far left. It was during a November 18th appearance on this former CNN show “Cuomo Primetime” that he first aired his concerns, criticizing the push to incorporate such things as critical race theories in the schools.
“It’s just virtue signaling,” Maher said. “My politics have not changed, I’m an old school liberal. When we talk about race, they changed. Not me. I was the old ‘we should be moving toward a colorblind society, we don’t see race.’ That’s the old way to look at it, I think that’s still the good way to look at it.”
It was again, during a July 31st episode of his show “Real Time with Bill Maher” that the host described how cancel culture actually belonged in “Stalin’s Russia”!
Again, there is not much that conservatives will agree with Bill Maher on, but at least he has enough common sense to realize when his fellow liberals have gone too far.
