In a landmark ruling, a court has ordered a husband to pay his ex-wife hundreds of thousands of dollars as reimbursement for thousands of hours of unpaid domestic labor during their 25-year marriage.
The businessman, whose name remains undisclosed, is now required to pay Ivana Moral approximately $220,000 or 204,624.86 euros, based on the Spanish minimum wage during the length of their union.
The female judge, Laura Ruiz Alaminos, presided over the divorce case in Velez-Malaga in southern Spain. Despite the husband’s considerable wealth and ability to secure the best legal representation to sway the divorce in his favor, Judge Alaminos did not believe he was entitled to everything. As a result, she ordered him to repay his ex-wife for all the years of hard work she invested in maintaining their home and caring for their family.
Throughout their marriage, Ivana Moral spent countless hours cleaning the family house and taking care of their two daughters. Because she devoted most of her time to her duties as a housewife, she never had the opportunity to pursue her own business interests or further her education.
The court ruling now requires her ex-husband to pay her more than $500 per month in restitution for his failure to adequately compensate her during their marriage. Additionally, he must pay $400 and $600 to their two daughters, who are now twenty and fourteen years old, respectively.
Ivana Moral married her husband in 1995 and persevered in the relationship until she sought a divorce in 2020. She expresses satisfaction with the judge’s ruling, as she will now receive a monthly payment from her ex-husband as compensation for her dedication and hard work throughout their marriage.
“Clearly, this was a case of abuse to be completely excluded financially (by my ex-husband) with nothing left after my marriage ended, so my daughters and I were left with nothing after all these years of putting all my time, energy, and love in the family,” she told. “I was supporting my husband in his work and in the family as a mother and a father. I was never allowed access to his financial affairs; everything was in his name.”
Upon marrying, Moral’s opportunities for personal growth and advancement rapidly diminished as her husband expected her “to essentially [work] in the home, which meant looking after the home and the family and all that involves.”
As Ivana Moral’s story unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the long-standing gender inequalities that persist in many households, where women’s contributions are frequently overlooked or undervalued. It is time for society to recognize and honor the work and sacrifices made by individuals like Ivana Moral, who tirelessly devote their lives to nurturing and supporting their families.
