I remember when my mother tried to go back to school in her thirties, she did so by going to a community college so she could get her degree, work and still raise me at the same time.
I was in middle school at the time and I don’t think I ever saw so many books in one room in my life! It was astonishing to see that much collected knowledge in one spot when my mom would have study groups with fellow students in our kitchen.
Her first semester of college, I recall her saying that it was going to take too long to get the tuition sorted out with all of the paperwork so she had this big yard sale to get the money together. She sold off a bunch of old things she didn’t need any more and raised the money for the first semester until the grant money kicked in.
She lived a good life from that bit of hard work. Which is why, when I think about the things my mother accomplished in her time with us I get so mad I almost turn beet red at the idea that people who HAVE NO DAMN BUSINESS BEING HERE getting things for free that she worked her ass off for!
As Americans, we have the right to get a fair shot at EVERYTHING in life. But while we have had it drilled into our heads that “white privilege” is a problem, other kinds of actual “privilege” exist.
Let’s take a look at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Most students at this university pay approximately $50,000 a year; $70,000 if you are an international student. But a sickening “rule” was recently announced at Emory that allows UNDOCUMENTED undergraduates to attend their college with all — that’s right, ALL — of their tuition and other financial needs covered while attending the school.
