White House warns Germany, France: release diesel or lose U.S. supply

Antiwar.com reports the White House has warned NATO allies Germany and France that they could be cut off from future U.S. diesel exports if they refuse to release diesel from their emergency inventories. The outlet says Reuters first reported the threat after speaking with three people familiar with the discussions.

What Reuters and the New York Post reportedly heard

According to Antiwar.com’s account of the Reuters reporting, U.S. officials delivered the warning to Berlin and Paris. Antiwar.com also cites the New York Post, quoting a U.S. official as saying, “It is in Europe’s best interest to work with the United States as we pursue multiple pathways to boost the supply of refined products and lower costs for consumers.”

The ask: 120 million barrels from EU reserves

Antiwar.com further reports that “Energy Secretary Chris Wright” told Politico the U.S. is asking the European Union to release 120 million barrels of diesel—described as more than 40% of the bloc’s emergency diesel stocks—and framed that drawdown as an alternative to a total U.S. diesel export ban. The outlet adds that the EU’s energy task force planned a call on Friday about potentially tapping additional reserves.

Source’s context on fuel pressure and geopolitics

Antiwar.com links the dispute to wider tensions between Washington and European allies over what it describes as the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran. The outlet argues the conflict has tightened European fuel supplies as Middle Eastern exports have fallen, compounding price pressures that began after sanctions on Russia and the war in Ukraine. It adds that Middle East oil supplies have been “significantly reduced” since the conflict began.

Domestic politics and prices, per the source

Antiwar.com writes that Trump is attempting to push down U.S. diesel prices ahead of midterm elections in early November, and says diesel hit a record high of $6.53 per gallon last week.
