A Canadian woman is suing eight doctors and mental health professionals, alleging that they failed to address her mental health needs and allowed her to self-diagnose as transgender, leading her to undergo irreversible and damaging surgeries.
34-year-old Michelle Zacchigna of Orillia, Ontario, explained:
“I will live the rest of my life without breasts, with a deepened voice and male-pattern balding, and without the ability to get pregnant. Removing my completely healthy uterus is my greatest regret.”
The lawsuit alleges that the defendants failed to address her mental health needs and allowed her to self-diagnose as transgender.
Michelle, who was given testosterone and underwent a bilateral mastectomy and hysterectomy, began pursuing medical transition in 2010. She claims that her desire to become transgender was never challenged, and alternative treatment options were never offered.
Her process started when she met defendant Rupert Raj, who referred her for male hormone therapy. Other defendants in the case are Nadine Lulu, Rick Lindal, Pamela Leece, and others.
It was only after years of transgender treatments and surgeries that it was revealed that she had several serious mental health issues and developmental disabilities.
It was later discovered that she had ADHD, tic disorder, borderline personality disorder, anxiety disorders, autism spectrum disorder, and traits of PTSD. She alleges that alternative treatment options were never offered, and her desire to become transgender was never challenged.
The report said, “Zacchigna alleges that all the defendants failed to address her serious mental health issues and developmental disabilities and instead only offered her irreversible medical interventions. She alleges that her desire to become transgender was never challenged, and alternative treatment options were never offered.”
She regrets her decisions and hopes to bring awareness to the issue to prevent vulnerable individuals from undergoing irreversible medical interventions without adequate diagnosis and treatment of their underlying mental health issues.
Michelle‘s story highlights the risks of allowing patients to self-diagnose and prescribe their own treatment without proper diagnosis and treatment of their mental health issues.
