A mother shares the harrowing experience of her toddler’s severe reaction to prescribed eczema cream, raising questions about the potential dangers of seemingly innocuous medications.
The toddler’s skin developed a dangerous addiction to a steroidal eczema cream prescribed by a doctor. Now, his 25-year-old mother, Savannah, has emerged to share the harrowing experience of her son, Boaz LaQua. The young mother initially began using the cream when Boaz was just four months old to combat mild eczema, a treatment she continued for over a year.
Two-year-old Boaz developed a distressing reaction to the steroidal cream. His skin grew so sensitive that he was confined to bed for weeks at a time, forced to wear socks on his hands to prevent him from scratching his tender skin. When Savannah discontinued the eczema cream six months ago, Boaz began to suffer from weeping sores and scabs all over his little body.
The cream rendered Boaz’s skin highly sensitive to other topical creams. Savannah had no choice but to halt the medication. Even though she found a doctor who prescribed a steroidal eczema cream that caused less pain upon withdrawal, Boaz’s irritated skin is still in the healing process.
Savannah decided to share Boaz’s story as a cautionary tale for others dealing with eczema. She said to Fox News, “It can happen to anybody, and it’s really scary because I know you want your children healthy, but at what cost? I feel like this was done on purpose – maybe not by the doctor who prescribed the eczema cream – but it happened for a reason.”
Boaz is now in remission, and his skin condition has significantly improved since he completely stopped using the eczema cream. While Savannah hopes to have another baby in the future, she plans to be more judicious when selecting treatments for her children.
Taking a stance, Savannah stated, “I feel like I’m going to look for a more holistic approach because the eczema cream has been scientifically proven as something that can cause damage. So why is it okay? Why does my son have to go through this?”
Boaz’s experience serves as a poignant reminder of the potency of eczema. According to Savannah, about two months after ceasing the cream, Boaz began to develop red rashes and bumps that grew worse every day. The open sores covered his entire body, forcing him to remain bedridden for weeks at a time. The young boy struggled to walk because his body hurt so badly.
“It was horrible to see, the worst thing I’ve ever been through,” said Savannah. “People said he looked like he had leprosy because he was covered in them, and his skin was scaly and rough.”
Boaz’s diagnosis was Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW), which can develop in the weeks and months after quitting steroid medication.
Savannah spoke about the stress they experienced, saying, “It was so stressful because we didn’t know much about Topical Steroid Withdrawal, also we didn’t know what was going to happen, whether he would recover or lose his life. We had to tape socks to his hands because he was constantly scratching. It was like chronic itchiness, and there were open sores.”
The young mother’s heartbreaking tale serves as a warning to all parents to be cautious and informed when choosing treatments for their children.
