Homes built in the early-to-mid-1900s often belonged to a generation of people who said, “Don’t waste money calling a repairman, I’ll do it myself.” This, of course, means it’s not uncommon for couples to buy an old “fixer-upper” and find something strange in their home.

That said, most people don’t find bundles of cash buried in the yard.

However, this is exactly what happened to Richard and Suzanne Gilson when they were doing some landscaping at their New Jersey home.

Working with a mini-excavator, Richard Gilson unearthed a significant amount of debris from around the couple’s home. Richard began hitting the glass and encountered what he thought were root balls.

When Richard looked closer, he realized what he’d initially thought were root balls, was actually money wrapped in burlap

There were two burlap balls with money stuffed inside of them, they had been in a glass jar that had since broken.

Each burlap money ball contained rolled-up $10’s and $20’s that amounted to $1000, and they had the date 1934 on them.

In the year 1934, the Great Depression would have been in full swing, which puts into perspective how important something like this would have been to someone back then.

Not to mention, you won’t believe how much that would be in today’s dollars. Twenty times the worth!

In 1934, $2,000 would have been a whopping $40,000 in today’s money

When Suzanne Gilson looked up the value of two thousand dollars in 1934, she couldn’t believe her eyes. It was like this person was burying forty thousand dollars.

Turns out, there was a story behind the money, and the Gilsons managed to uncover that too.

At first, Richard thought it must be tied to some illegal activity from the 1930s’ but soon learned the truth. The home was owned by a man named James Dempsey, who had instructed his daughter to bury the money.

It wasn’t the haul from a bank robbery as Richard had first suspected, but actually the money of a hardworking man who just wanted to put something away during the Great Depression.

The only problem, after the family buried it they forgot the money’s location and couldn’t find it.

Although it’s not a massive amount of money, it’s the story behind it that makes it special, which is why Rich says he won’t be spending it anytime soon.
