A major news network faces a backlash from its own viewers for giving airtime to a conservative powerhouse, inadvertently stirring the political pot and revealing the deepening divide in the country’s perception of democracy.

Anderson Cooper, a prominent figure on CNN, recently went on an exhaustive rant about the network’s decision to host a town hall event featuring former President Trump in New Hampshire.

According to Cooper, viewers were entitled to their anger at the sight of a network giving the stage to someone they believe tried to “destroy democracy.” He went further to state that it would be completely reasonable for them to choose to never watch the network again.

“Your anger and disappointment are entirely justified, especially when an individual who is believed to have attempted to undermine our democracy gets an invitation to take the stage, entertain a crowd of Republican voters and is allowed to persist in propagating falsehood after falsehood,” Cooper vented.

Cooper, a long-standing contributor to CNN, found it unsettling to hear Trump, whom he referred to as “that person,” call a “black law enforcement officer a ‘thug,'” a comment aimed at Capitol Police Officer Michael Byrd, who fatally shot Ashli Babbitt on January 6. Cooper also found it objectionable that Trump pledged to pardon the January 6 Capitol protestors, many of whom are facing long prison terms for what amounts to simple trespassing.

Equally disturbing to Cooper were Trump’s response to the E. Jean Carroll verdict, his continued questioning of the 2020 election’s legitimacy, and the crowd’s positive reaction to the former president.

Cooper conveyed to his viewers that he understood their irritation at seeing “that man” on their network. He reminded them, however, that Trump is currently the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.

“Perhaps you’ve tuned him out since he left office, maybe you’ve relished the silence; thinking ‘there’s no way this could happen again,’ that some investigation will halt him, well it hasn’t so far,” Cooper opined. “So, if last night demonstrated anything, it’s that it can happen again, it is happening again. He hasn’t changed, and he is campaigning vigorously,” he continued.

Finally, Cooper told his viewers they had every right to feel “outraged.” He suggested they could even choose to “never watch this network again,” but insisted that ignoring Trump won’t “make that person disappear.”
