A teenage girl named Chelsea Schiffel boarded a United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Sydney. At just 15 years old, she never anticipated the unsettling encounter that awaited her. Chelsea claimed that an elderly man seated nearby groped her during the flight. However, what proved to be even more troubling was the way the airline responded to the incident.

The story unfolded when Chelsea’s mother, 42-year-old Narelle, left her seat to chat with another family member situated in the back of the plane. It was during this time that the older male passenger allegedly touched Chelsea’s breasts twice. Upon hearing her daughter’s account of the situation, Narelle immediately reported the incident to the airline staff members. But, to her dismay, the response was far from what she expected.

Narelle demanded different seats for the family, seeking a sense of safety and reassurance. However, the airline insisted that they remain in their original seats for the remainder of the flight. To make matters worse, Chelsea and her family were told that her short shorts were the cause of the incident.

In a letter obtained by News Corp, United Airlines not only denied the family’s allegations but also criticized Chelsea’s choice of clothing. The letter cited accounts from flight attendants and passengers, stating that Chelsea had been allowed to change seats multiple times and that she had repeatedly crawled over the sleeping customer in question. Furthermore, the letter mentioned Chelsea’s “extremely short shorts,” and accused the family of providing no evidence of negligence on the airline’s part.

Naturally, Chelsea felt outraged by the airline’s version of events. She said, “For me, it comes across, by them saying that, [it] feels like they were telling me that I was asking for it.” Unfortunately, the family’s attempts to take legal action against United Airlines were unsuccessful due to insufficient evidence to support their claims.

Chelsea Schiffel firmly believed that a woman’s choice of attire should not be held responsible for any alleged sexual attack. Many would agree with her sentiment. But what about the girl’s purported actions? It’s important to acknowledge that no child should ever be touched inappropriately. At the same time, they should not climb over other passengers, regardless of their clothing.

If Chelsea indeed behaved in such a manner, it’s possible that the startled stranger, merely attempting to sleep, might have unintentionally touched her in an effort to protect his personal space. Perhaps the real lesson to be learned here has little to do with clothing and more to do with the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” This includes respecting others’ personal boundaries and keeping one’s hands and body to oneself.
